Women veterans are more likely to experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) from non-deployment causes, but the current Veterans Health Administration (VHA) TBI screening focuses on deployment-related injuries. This study found that the VHA screening tool misses many non-deployment TBIs, especially those caused by physical assault or sports. The results suggest that expanding TBI screening to include non-deployment events could improve detection among women veterans.
