I serve as Deputy Director of the RR&D TBI Center of Excellence at VA Boston Healthcare System (the Translational Center for TBI and Stress Disorders, TRACTS). Our Center is conducting state-of-the-art research studies that aim to understand how mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related stress disorders, independently and interactively, impact the brain leading to problems in daily functional status. Post-9/11 veterans face a many challenges as they return home and adjust to civilian life. I have established a multisite assessment and rehabilitation center (Boston and Houston VAMCs) to develop and test new treatment models for post-9/11 Veterans and address the treatment gaps and needs of post-9/11 Veterans, who are often reluctant to engage in mental health treatment. The hallmark of this center is the STEP-Home program, which takes a novel, integrative approach to the treatment of military mTBI and co-occurring disorders that combines psychoeducation with empirically validated cognitive behavioral skills training to assist post-9/11 Veteran reintegration. We have also developed the BAT-L: Boston Assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury- Lifetime. The BAT-L is the first validated post-combat semi-structured clinical interview to characterize head injuries and diagnose TBIs throughout the lifespan. The BAT-L, unlike existing TBI interviews, includes detailed assessment of blast exposure and blast-related TBI as well as evaluates TBIs acquired throughout a veteran's lifetime to capture the many and varied types of injuries common to this cohort. The interview has been augmented to assess risk for subconcussive injury secondary to blast and blunt injuries. Instrument validity and research utility was published in the Journal of Head Trauma and Rehabilitation in 2014. Validation of the BAT-L for intimate partner violence (BAT-L/IPV) was published in the Journal of Head Trauma and Rehabilitation in 2021.
